Is Education an Instrument for Social Development through Social Mobility?!!

- What is Social Mobility?
- What is Education?
- Can education change the social status?
- What are the barriers to social mobility?
Education and Social Mobility.
Social mobility is the movement of majority of people residing at a particular area having similar social status to the other social status(either from poor to rich or from rich to poor). For example if the agrarian community residing at a particular place(most probably in village)earn great profit from agriculture and became rich, then we can consider it as social mobility, because their social status has changed from poor to rich.Social hierarchy or stratification is important in examining social mobility. Both upward and downward mobilities are possible.
“Education is the all-round drawing out of best in man and child,in mind, body and spirit.”. -GANDHIJI
Education has a pivotal role in the development of all people in every means.Personal,Social and professional skills can be acquired through education. These skills lead to the socio-economic development of a society.
It is important to provide education for all children.According to RTE(Right To Education Act),every children between the age of six and fourteen should be provided free and compulsory education.Let me ask you one thing, being a member of this so called sophisticated society can we claim that every children in our country are getting proper education. No?!!Then it is such a shame. The major barriers to social mobility are inequalities and marginalisation. The children from poor economic background are not getting proper education.Their parents are not able to send them to school because of poverty. What will happen if the poor children get proper education? Can they change their status? There comes the next obstacle, the inequality in employment opportunities.Children from poor economic background with high potentials in academics are not able to achieve their desired goals, but in the case of children from rich family always getting white collar jobs even if they have poor performance in academics.Social status remain same in both the cases;poor is always poor and rich is always rich.
We,the educated people are not questioning this malpractices, then what development do we have through education? Feeling pity.
So glad to say that some countries, such as Denmark,Canada, are providing proper education and high quality employment opportunities for all, regardless of the socio-economic status of them.It is really appreciable.
We can expect a better tomorrow without any sort of inequalities.Let the poor people move to higher social status in the light of education. It is our responsibility to clear their path, which is having full of obstacles.
Thank you.
